The economic value of the material aluminium has at all times made the cycle of metal processing, metal use and recycling profitable. Today this cycle is almost closed.
The production of primary aluminium from alumina is energy-intensive (13.5 MWh electrical energy per ton); but the recycling of secondary aluminium requires only
5 % of this energy and results in no loss of properties.
From an aluminium beverage can you can thus produce again a can, a can ..... or a car. Seen in the long run, aluminium has a positive energy balance. Aluminium with its specific properties is thus a sustainable material par excellence, essential for the future.
