Economic relevance (as at 2014)

The worldwide consumption of aluminium totals to some 56 million tons per year, in Europe to more than in 11 million, in Germany to 2.9 million tons. More than 30 % of the aluminium used is from recyled products. In the sector of aluminium semi-finished products, Alunorf with a production of more than 1.5 million tons per year accounts for approx. 3/4 of the total volume in Germany. Important fields of application are transport, the building industry, engineering and packaging.

The four German primary aluminium smelters produce 531,000 tons, the secondary aluminium smelters 600,000 tons of recycled aluminium. The production of semi-finished products (rolled and extruded products as well as wires and forgings) totals to more than 2.5 million tons, shape casting to some 990,000 tons. The further processing of aluminium comprises the production of foil and thin strip (271,000 tons), the production of tubes, cans, and extrusions (43,000 tons) and the production of aluminium powder (35,000 tons).

The total revenue of the German aluminium industry of 15.2 billion Euro is earned by some 74,000 people in 600 enterprises.
